The MKE 400 is a small, highly directional shotgun microphone that mounts on a camera. An acoustic interference tube gives it a supercardioid pickup pattern, which favours sound from in front of the camera and reduces background noise arriving from the sides. An internal suspension mount and integrated wind protection limit handling noise, and a furry windshield is supplied for outdoor use.
A three-step sensitivity switch lets the user match the level to loud or quiet surroundings, and a switchable low-cut filter reduces low-frequency rumble and wind noise to help speech clarity. A headphone output with its own volume control allows monitoring while recording, which is useful on cameras without a headphone jack.
It connects through two interchangeable 3.5 mm locking coiled cables, one TRS for DSLR/mirrorless cameras and one TRRS for mobile devices. Two AAA batteries power it for more than 100 hours, and the microphone switches on and off automatically when connected to a DSLR/M camera. A cold-shoe mount with a quarter-20 thread handles mounting.
