The TAC-8 is an 18-in/20-out Thunderbolt interface in a 1U metal chassis. Eight XLR/TRS combo inputs feed preamps with up to 60 dB of gain, individual clip LEDs and switchable 48 V phantom power in two groups of four. Inputs 1 and 2 have Hi-Z switches for direct guitar or bass connection.
On the output side there are ten balanced TRS jacks, two front-panel headphone outputs with their own volume controls, and a large output volume knob. Conversion uses 4x upsampling, and the asynchronous transfer system is not affected by computer jitter. Sample rates run up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
Digital connections include coaxial S/PDIF in and out, ADAT Optical in and out (with S/MUX and S/MUX4 support at higher rates), Word Clock on BNC with a clock source indicator, and 5-pin DIN MIDI in and out. In standalone mode the unit works as an 8-channel preamp and A/D or D/A converter without a computer. Computer connection is by Thunderbolt on Intel Macs running macOS 10.14 to 13.
