The 850P is an analog preamplifier built as two separate boxes. One chassis holds the power supply, digital controller circuitry, software processing and LED display. The second chassis holds only the audio circuitry, which keeps the signal path isolated from the control electronics. The audio circuits are also suspended to limit microphonic vibration.
Power supply regulation uses independent inductive DC filtering, with one inductor for every IC in the signal path, 40 stages in all. Each line input has a gain offset adjustment of ±10 dB. Any line input can be set to a home-theater mode, which bypasses the volume control so an external processor or controller sets the level.
There are 3 pairs of XLR and 5 pairs of RCA inputs, and 2 pairs each of XLR and RCA outputs, covering both fixed and variable output. The two chassis are linked by three colour-coded cables, and a SimLink cable and the FRM-3 backlit remote are supplied. It is part of the maker's North Collection range.
