KMR 81 i

The KMR 81 i combines a pressure gradient condenser capsule with a medium-length interference tube. The result is a narrow 90° pickup angle and strong rejection of unwanted sound. The lobe pattern does not change with frequency, so off-axis sound is picked up at a lower level without added coloration. This helps when actors move and makes a misaligned microphone easier to correct in post.

Frequency response is linear up to 2 kHz, followed by a broad treble lift that offsets high-frequency losses at longer distances. Self-noise is 12 dB-A and sensitivity is 18 mV/Pa. Two switches are fitted: a 10 dB pre-attenuation pad, which raises the maximum SPL from 128 dB to 138 dB, and a 200 Hz low cut for proximity effect at short distances.

The microphone weighs 145 g, has a balanced centre of gravity and draws little current, which suits long days on location. It is phantom powered (P48) and connects through a 3-pin XLR. It is available in nickel or black (mt), and a WS 81 windscreen is included with both.
