Impulse 49 combines a 49-note, piano-style semi-weighted keyboard with assignable aftertouch and a control surface for software. The keybed is scanned 10,000 times per second by the High-Rate Scan system to capture playing detail. Eight multicolour backlit pads respond to velocity and pressure, and in Ableton Live they act as clip launchers whose colour shows whether a clip is loaded, playing or recording.
Control is handled by eight endless encoders, nine 45mm sliders, six transport buttons, mute/solo buttons, pitch bend and modulation wheels, octave/transpose buttons and a blue-backlit LCD. An arpeggiator with tap tempo and roll is built in. All controls can be mapped to software parameters, and the unit gives mixer, transport and plug-in control in Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Reason and Cakewalk/Sonar.
The keyboard is class-compliant and powered over USB from a Mac or Windows computer, so no power supply is needed. A 5-pin DIN MIDI output connects it to hardware synths and modules, and there are sustain and expression pedal inputs. Ableton Live Lite and a Loopmasters sample library are included.
