The DAC R is a stereo PCM converter that handles 16 to 24-bit audio at sample rates from 32kHz to 192kHz on every input. It uses a pair of parallel-connected Wolfson WM8742 converter chips fed through a buffer stage. No sample rate conversion is applied, so audio is processed at the rate it arrives. Three user-selectable digital filters are provided.
The USB input is built around an XMOS USB Audio 2.0 interface with asynchronous clocking and is isolated from the host computer by a transformer. The optical and coaxial inputs go to a digital receiver with a low-jitter clock and a dedicated PLL, and these receiver stages have their own power supplies. The analogue output stage is a discrete differential design with a multiple-feedback filter. The power supply uses a toroidal transformer, and the control microcontroller has a separate supply from the audio circuitry.
Inputs are one USB, two Toslink optical and two isolated 75 ohm coaxial. Optical and coaxial digital outputs are also available, taken after the receiver and PLL. The unit sits in an aluminium and steel case and includes a remote control.
